Former wife of fire victim questions sedative content in husband’s blood

The jury at an inquest into the death of John Brennan (51) last year in a house fire at Wellington Square found that Mr Brennan died from acute cardiac failure and respiratory failure as a result of smoke inhalation.

The jury heard that Mr Brennan was discovered on August 26, at 2am slumped against the door of his upstairs apartment at number 2 Wellington Square in the city.

The fire brigade dragged him from the apartment to the hallway and attempted to resuscitate him until the paramedics arrived and also tried CPR.

Efforts to resuscitate Mr Brennan failed and a doctor at the scene pronounced Mr Brennan dead at 2.25am.

Coroner Tim Kiely read the judgment following reports from paramedic, Niall Campion who attended the fire on the night, and from Dr Landers who carried out a post mortem on the body the following day.

The doctor told the inquest that along with a high presence of alcohol, there were also elevated levels of prescription drugs such as Tramadol and DAF in Mr Brennan’s system according to the toxicology report.

He said, “From the post mortem I discovered there was strong staining of the respiratory system including the trachea and bronchi but there was no internal evidence of injury.”

However he added, “There was a high level of carbon monoxide present at 59 per cent and a high level of alcohol present in Mr Brennan’s bloodstream following toxicology examination. There were also several other sedatives present in his system which would have had a combined effect with alcohol,” he added.

The inquest heard that drugs Tramadol and DAF were two such drugs discovered in his blood stream and Ms Sheila Lawler, former wife of Mr Brennan confirmed that Mr Brennan had been receiving psychiatric treatment in St Canices’s Hospital over a period of time where these drugs may have been prescribed.

Following the judgement, Ms Sheila Lawler asked the doctor whether the drugs found in Mr Brennan’s system were anti-psychotic drugs, to which Dr Landers replied, “yes, some would have had anti-psychotic properties.”

Following the inquest, Ms Lawler told the Kilkenny Advertiser she was concerned at the amount of drugs both sedatives and anti-psychotic drugs that were discovered in Mr Brennan’s system.

“I know he had a problem with alcohol but he was never a pill popper. There was a huge selection of these prescription drugs and their packaging discovered in his flat after he died and I question how he came to have so much? He didn’t need anti-psychotic drugs - there was nothing wrong with his mind and so I wonder why he had them. Maybe if he hadn’t had access to all these prescribed drugs he might be with us here today. I believe the mixture of alcohol and drugs inhibited him from smelling the smoke from the fire on time and this is why he was killed,” she said.

Mr Brennan was a former Blackrock College student originally from Dublin city in Booterstown. His late father was a garda from Ballylynan in Co Laois where Mr Brennan used to visit every Saturday to tend to his cattle. He was well-to-do and attended a fee-paying school growing up before buying a restaurant with a business partner in Dun Laoghaire - Steers Steakhouse. It was around then that Mr Brennan became dependent on alcohol.

Ms Lawler separated from Mr Brennan and remarried. Mr Brennan moved around and finally settled in Kilkenny where he was well-known and much loved by those who knew him.

Ms Lawler has questioned why her ex-husband was in HSE- provided accommodation that had no smoke alarms or no fire alarms fitted - which might have saved his life.

Labopharm sees FDA rejecting pain formulation

(Adds details)

TORONTO, April 2 (Reuters) - Shares of Labopharm Inc (DDS.TO) tumbled on Thursday after it said a twice-daily pain combination missed a key goal in a late-stage trial and U.S. regulators would likely reject its application for the formulation's approval.

The study related to its twice-daily formulation of tramadol and acetaminophen. It showed results that were not statistically significant when judging pain-intensity differences, an important goal of the study.

The Montreal-based drugmaker said it planned to discuss the findings with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to determine "the path forward."

Labopharm said that the study results would have no bearing on the upcoming U.S. launch of its once-daily tramadol product which received regulatory approval late last year.

The shares dropped 25 percent to C$1.23 soon after the Toronto Stock Exchange opened.
Codeine Use And Accident Risk

The risk of being involved in a traffic accident with personal injury is significantly higher among codeine users than non-users. However, sporadic or moderate use of codeine alone does not carry an increased risk, according to a newly published by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

We Offer Cheap Tramadol Online!

Codeine and tramadol are painkillers in the opiate group, used for mild to moderate pain. In Norway, codeine is included in Paralgin forte and Pinex forte, and tramadol, amongst others, in Nobligan. Norway has a higher consumption of codeine preparations than other European countries.

Earlier studies have given conflicting results when evaluating traffic accident risk linked to the use of codeine and tramadol. In this new study from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, anonymised data from the Norwegian Prescription Database and Road Traffic Accident Register was used to study whether codeine- or tramadol users have an increased risk of being involved in a traffic accident with personal injury.

During the 33 months of the study, 181 road traffic accidents were registered with personal injury where the driver had been exposed to codeine and 20 after exposure to tramadol. ”Exposure” is defined as the first 7 days after the dispensing of a prescription for a codeine- or tramadol preparation.

The study showed that the risk of being involved in a road traffic accident with personal injury was twice as high in the period after having a prescription for codeine dispensed. For those who had used more than approximately 400 tablets per year, the risk of being involved in a traffic accident was 3 times as large. When the use of other potential impairing medicines was excluded, the risk of accident sank significantly. For sporadic codeine users there was no increased risk of accident. There was not a significantly higher risk for tramadol.

"We have previously seen that large users of codeine preparations often use benzodiazepines (anxiolytics- and hypnotics) or carisoprodol (muscle relaxants /painkillers) in addition. This is an important contributory factor when evaluating the accident risk," says the study’s leader Liliana Bachs.

A total of 98 of the 181 drivers exposed to codeine who were included in the study had also been dispensed other medicines with abuse potential in the week prior to the accident.

"One can conclude that sporadic or moderate use of codeine alone to a small degree increases the chance of being involved in accidents with personal injury. Simultaneous use of benzodiazepines or carisoprodol gives a clear increase in the risk of accidents," explains Bachs.

Q: My cholesterol has always been around 200, but I have a bad family history and a past angioplasty. My doctor has prescribed various statin drugs, most recently Crestor. I started on a Friday, and on Sunday I woke with what has been diagnosed as transient global amnesia. I played golf that morning and played well, but I kept asking the same questions over and over. My wife and my golfing partners took me to the hospital after nine holes.

This began at 7 a.m., and I did not regain any short-term memory until 3 p.m. By 5 p.m., I was back to normal. Could Crestor cause this?

A: We can't say whether Crestor caused your transient global amnesia (TGA), but others have reported memory problems and TGA while taking statin cholesterol-lowering medicines. TGA is not a common side effect, but it is distressing. You and your doctor may need to find something other than a statin.

Q: When you write about the high cost of medicines, tell people to shop around, because prices vary. When my mother's medicines became cost-prohibitive, we contacted the drug companies. They have programs to assist people with very low incomes.

A: It makes sense to compare prices from several pharmacies, both local and mail-order. People with low incomes should certainly check the pharmaceutical companies' assistance programs. They require some paperwork but can save a lot of money. To find out more, go to the Web site www.helpingpatients.org.

Q: My doctor prescribed Ultracet for minor pain. My druggist assures me it has no narcotics, mainly Tylenol. Half a tablet eased my pain for 12 hours. Are there similar over-the-counter drugs (besides Tylenol)?

A: Ultracet contains acetaminophen (the ingredient in Tylenol) and tramadol (the ingredient in Ultram). There is no OTC equivalent for tramadol.
